The Experience of Shaktipat
Shaktipat is understood to be the highest form of spiritual initiation, an initiation that bestows immediate and spontaneous entry into spiritual life.
The concept of Shaktipat has been documented in textual sources since about the sixth century onward. The earliest references to Shaktipat indicate that its authentic experience was always considered to be difficult to obtain and secure. For the student, the occasion of Shaktipat sets in motion an unprecedented journey of spiritual discovery. Though often received in absence of formal, external rituals of initiation, Shaktipat is initiatory in character. It provokes a profound awakening. For countless ages, great sages have used Shaktipat as a secret means of initiation. Enlivening one’s own glory and luster of divine enlightenment, giving an instantaneous direct experience of Brahman, the Eternal Spirit, is the secret meaning of Shaktipat.
With the initiation called Shaktipat, the teacher enlivens silence, which is the source of the self and creation. Putting this divine act into words makes it sound so simple and easy, but what actually happens within, hidden from the senses, is something marvelous. It can only be deciphered by the deepest part of you, yet your whole Being is rejuvenated by it’s light. Shaktipat is the supreme act of the guru’s grace. It is the lighting bolt that reveals the greatest treasure within. It is the ultimate gesture of compassion, the breath of the absolute. When Shakti is awakened by the guru’s grace, the knot of the heart is released. Karmas are washed away and the Being is revealed within. This Being is the embodiment of wisdom, light and truth. It is your destiny that brings you to the teacher to receive Shaktipat, but then you must cultivate the experience through regular meditation. There are four ways to grant Shaktipat: by means of the teachers look, touch, word, will or breath. It is recommended that an individual receive Shaktipat at least four times and learn – The Technique of Being.
After receiving Shaktipat various types of internal activities occur. Sensations may be experienced, stirrings may occur in the head, heart and solar plexus. One may enter a deep state of meditation with no effort and not move for forty minutes or longer. Some see bright colors and profound visions. Other experience their heart open, while others experience their consciousness expanding. Everyone experiences the inward pulling sensation and the waves of undeniable silence taking them deeper and deeper inside. Most feel a deep peace in the heart and some experience a huge void of silence.
One account of Shaktipat reception went like this:
“I felt breath on my forehead and immediately there was a tingling sensation in my third eye area and I saw a very bright white light there. The sensation began to move thru my whole head. I felt my whole body relax and the sensation in my head moved down to my heart. I saw my heart open into a beautiful lotus flower with many petals unfolding. I was Being sucked further and further into silence. There were continual waves of silence that came from this flower of my heart and they continued to radiate outwards. I continued to go deeper and deeper into this silence. I had many great insights into my life. At one point I had no thoughts at all. This light and peaceful feeling lasted for days afterwards”.
It is true that from the level of the individual’s subjective experience there are great variations in the intensity of Shaktipat. Some people have very intense experiences with overwhelming sensations and visions. For others, the experience is milder and while still strong, not so intense. For yet others, there may be very little immediate experience. It is important to understand no matter what your experience, the tradition holds that in all cases what has been accomplished is the same, great peace, the beginning of the destruction of cosmic amnesia. The differences in subjective experiences are based on karma.
Shaktipat gives what is known as the “illuminating knowledge”. As this knowledge unfolds more and more 1t leads to” liberation ‘, the complete and total recovery from limitation, from delusion, from ignorance, from the bondage of karma. One day the light of freedom reaches such a level that a human Being exclaims, I am unbounded, free, and the totality of the universe. For many who have received Shaktipat it has inspired profound change in their lives, work, family life, experience of themselves and their perspective on life and its purposes. They also become inspired spirituality.
One student shared their experience:
“I started practicing the Technique of Being and receiving Shaktipat a year and a half ago and since that time I have changed so much. I feel as though I am on the leading edge of evolution. I am happy and have great peace of mind. I have greater awareness, and I have the ability to focus for long periods of time easily. I’m becoming very successful, and I’m much more graceful and attentive. I feel so fulfilled inside, the need to drink and take hallucinogenic drugs are a thing of the past. The feeling of Being settled and content are the most wonderful blessings that could have ever happened to me, I wish everyone could experience these benefits”.
Shaktipat is liberating and consoling. It is this love awakened that will ultimately reveal the secrets of existence. When the hard shell of limitation that encases the human heart is cracked open, there results an outpouring of intoxicating love, unimaginable in nature. In some ultimate sense, Shaktipat is a new birth. Live your full potential. Get the full value of life.
Be bold. Live your birthright. Be Happy.
